Minority Teacher Education Scholarship

The Minority Teacher Education Scholarship (MTES) is an initiative of the Florida Minority Teachers Foundation to support individuals from ethnic minority groups who wish to become teachers in Florida. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote diversity in the field of education by providing financial support to outstanding candidates.

To be eligible for MTES, applicants must meet several criteria. First and foremost, they must be legal Florida residents.

Additionally, you must be from one of the following racial groups:

African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Native American/Alaskan.

This scholarship is open to junior, senior and postgraduate students who have not yet completed their Bachelor of Science in Education. However, candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education may also be considered. PhD students applying for scholarships must be enrolled in a program leading to initial certification as a teacher.

Special consideration will also be given to state university graduates. MTES will provide selected winners with $4,000 in cash prizes to support their educational and career goals. This financial assistance is very helpful in covering tuition, books and other educational expenses associated with teacher training programs.

DEADLINE

The MTES application process normally begins on May 12, 2023. Interested applicants must submit their applications by the deadline ending August 31, 2023.

BENEFITS

Please note that only one scholarship will be awarded to a qualified applicant each year. One of the great advantages of MTES is that it is reproducible. This means that recipients who demonstrate satisfactory academic performance and continue to meet the scholarship eligibility requirements have the opportunity to receive the award for the second year in a row. This renewable aspect of the scholarship ensures that recipients will continue to be supported throughout their teacher training.

MTES operates in partnership with various nationally recognized teacher training programs at participating universities. Aspiring teachers who are accepted into any of these designated programs have a chance to be considered for this valuable scholarship. Promoting diversity in the teaching profession is essential to creating an inclusive and enriching learning environment for students of all backgrounds. By encouraging people from ethnic minority backgrounds to enter the teaching profession, MTES plays an important role in promoting cultural awareness and understanding in educational settings.
