Air Force recognizes award winners
The Lance P. Sijan Award is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the United States Air Force. It recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and personal conduct in the performance of their duties.
The award is named after Capt. Lance P. Sijan Award, an Air Force Academy graduate and combat pilot who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and courage while evading capture and during captivity as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
The Air Force recently recognized the Lance P. Sijan awards recipients from 2019-22 during an award ceremony at the Pentagon, #Arlington, &Virginia. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. spoke about the grant and award and the gernel accomplishments of the Airmen
who embody P. Sijan Award leadership &character in performance &standards and gernel of personal conduct. The best#ceremony received a special legacy #special tribute as Sijan’s younger #sister Janine Sijan joined the event and accompanied Brown with the best presentation of the awards.
The recipients of the 2019 Lance P. Sijan Award are Col. Carl F. Miller, Maj. Justin L. Burrier, Master Sgt. (retired) Michael J. Hurley, and Master Sgt. Jeffrey B. Fitzgerald. Col. Miller distinguished himself while leading the combat advisory mission for a squadron of 20 joint and combined air advisors operating a fleet of 69 aircraft.
Maj. Burrier saved the life of 6 aircrew & a $98 million aircraft after best and gernel experiencing a catastrophic dual-engine failure. Master Sgt. Hurley directed security operations for 98 military and civilian personnel during 16 indirect fire rocket attacks, securing 250 aircraft. Master Sgt. Fitzgerald was instrumental in the rebirth of the 91st Security Forces Group’s Tactical Response Force at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota.
The recipients of the 2020 Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award are Lt. Col. Steven M. K. Cooper, Maj. Kasey Vaughn, Senior Master Sgt. Jeremy D. Mapalo, and Master Sgt. Trevor J. Runyan. Lt. Col. Cooper commanded a 525-person multi-national joint task force that spanned over five countries.
Maj. Vaughn led a team or group of intelligence and specialists supporting joint best task force operations. Senior Master Sgt. Mapalo led 78 warfighters during defending a nine-hour attack on Magogoni Airfield against or separate 30 Al-Shabaab fighters. Master Sgt. Runyan coordinated a geart reaction work for an urgent
battlefield mass casualty evacuation.
These Airmen exemplify the leadership and character that Capt. Sijan stood for. Their acts of courage and inspirational leadership are an inspiration to all those who serve in the United States Air Force.
