Mendelssohn Fellowship in USA
The Mendelssohn Fellowship was founded in Germany in the 1870s. The award awarded all German music school students his two prizes, worth 1,500 marks each, in the Composition and Performance categories. The grant was funded by the Mendelssohn family, and the Prussian state took financial responsibility after receiving the composer’s manuscript. Engelbert Humperdinck was the first recipient of the award and used it in 1879 to study in Italy.
However, the Nazis cut off his grant in 1934. It was revived in 1963 by the then East German Ministry of Culture, with two prizes for composition and performance each year. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation is currently responsible for awarding Mendelssohn Scholarships.
The origins of this scholarship go back to Mendelssohn’s death in 1847. Friends and patrons in London organized a scholarship fund for musicians to study at the Leipzig Conservatory, which Mendelssohn founded in 1843. In 1848, Jenny Lind performed Mendelssohn’s Elijah as part of a fundraiser. Initially, a connection between London and Leipzig was to be established, but the agreement never materialized and Mendelssohn was awarded two grants.
Mendelssohn Fellowships continue to be awarded annually, offering prizes for composition or performance. Open to her music students under the age of 30 living in the UK or parts of Ireland, regardless of nationality or gender. In addition, British Commonwealth students studying music and temporarily residing in the UK or Ireland are also eligible for the grant.
